Relationship lessons/The four scores/Lesson 7

How the index is mixed

The single number is a weighted blend. It is the wrong place to stop reading.

Emotional pull is 32% of the index. Ease of talk is 24%. The long game is 24%. The last 20% is what remains after friction is subtracted from 100. A pair can look calm in the total while talk is the weak leg, or look dramatic in the total because friction is doing all the work.

The relationship label nudges the blend. Dating adds a little emotional pull. An unnamed bond lowers ease of talk. Being already over raises friction. Friendship lowers it. The nudge is small on purpose. The label is not a second chart. It is the story you said you are in, and the sentences lean on that story.

Read the four bars before you remember the total. If you can say which bar surprised you, the reading did its job. If you can only remember “we got a 70,” you used it as a fortune slip.

Try this

  1. Cover the index with your hand. Name the highest bar and the lowest bar.
  2. Say what the lowest bar would look like in one ordinary week.
  3. Only then look at the index, and check whether it hid that bar.

Easy to miss: Quoting the total to them as if it were the whole reading.
